It’s for you is a piece I have been thinking about for a long time. Artist and friend, Greg Lookerse, gave me these pink phones almost two years ago. I wanted to make something good with them and finally it happened when Megan Payne and Sarah Ingel invited me to be part of LadyFestCLT. LadyFestCLT is a annual festival showcasing performance and film works by female + femme identifying artists.
It’s for you was a simple performance that took place before LadyFestCLT started and at the intermission of the dance show. I was standing in a made up world of mute pink inviting the audience to take a phone call. The audio said, “hey it’s me, just calling to say you are enough.” Very simple and straightforward….or so I thought. A lot of people heard, “hey it’s me, just calling to say you’re a mess.” Which totally changed the piece and made me think - do people hear what they want? Do they not think that someone, an artist like me, would want to call them enough? Sure there is some discrepancy in the audio file, so I can hear how that happened but also makes me question what the audience wanted to hear
