I was honored with artist and friend, Caitlin C Harvey invited me to perform as part of her solo show tell me. The show consisted of blind contours, small sculpture, prints of all kinds and embroidery. It was an incredible mixed media show. When she approached me she said can you make something to do with body language. I was like yikes I don’t even think I have anything. But then we talked more and I developed will you hold my hand? A piece that would unravel during the two hour reception.
The piece came from interactions and my friendship with Caitlin. This is how the piece was talked about on social media and the Courtroom Gallery’s website: “Dennissa Young will be performing a new piece called ‘Will you hold my hand?’ The piece birthed from a place of loneliness and love for holding hands with the artist, Caitlin C Harvey. What does body language mean?”
The exposed arms and legs and big lips came from Caitlin’s love for these body parts. And the holding hands came from wanting to become un-lonely. The wearable sculpture represents how my depression feels
